With Emily Curtis
Spring is in the air and it’s time to smell the roses. Since ancient times, roses have been known for their healing qualities, especially for the heart. Join Emily Curtis for an immersive experience learning how to bundle dye, creating beautiful natural patterns on your favorite garments or fabrics. You will learn a tying and steaming technique used to produce beautiful textile creations. You will also learn some of the chemistry that makes the natural dyeing process a permanent work of art! This class will focus on the rose, there are a myriad of plants that can be used in bundle dyeing but the rose is special. The variety of hues and its oils combine to produce unbelievable properties.
The natural steaming of the rose petals will infuse the air and your garments! Part of this class will be surrendering to the power of the rose. The aromatic qualities of the rose release stored heart energy creating new pathways for opening. Let this be a restorative, meditative process cleansing and rejuvenating the heart. You will learn a new art creating beautiful garments or textiles that will connect your everyday world with a powerful healing experience. When you wear these pieces or see what you have created you will naturally be brought back to the place of the heart. We encourage everyone to bring a journal to write about what comes up through the experience. We look forward to our creations and healing work together. All materials will be provided for you.
Guest Instructor Emily Curtis was drawn to natural dyes during her work as a graduate student, studying textiles in San Francisco. She soon became disheartened by the corporate driven methods of the program and wished to study from traditional communities. She traveled throughout South East Asia learning various natural dyeing methods. Through these experiences she has developed practices with natural dyeing that are not just art but provide healing modalities. In these communities everything is connected from the natural world to the spiritual. Plants serve as medicine in many ways, not just through ingestion or topical uses but as protection and healing for the spirit through textiles. Emily has been experimenting and building her own methods through these experiences. She hopes to incorporate these ancient traditions into our modern society where so much connection has been lost.
